Sony which will be releasing their next gen console , the Playstation 4 in November might just ruin their reputation due to what seems to be a “Forced Labor Program” hidden under the codename : Internship. Thousands of students from the Xi’an Institute of Technology are being forced to work at Foxconn Yantai to assemble PS4 parts, as they will be unable to graduate if they don’t.
Officially this program has been named ”Internship” while in the background students are being forced to work at Foxconn which isn’t even related to their field of study. Students from accounting and computer science have been assigned to glue the parts of PS4′s while others have been assigned to put manuals and cords in the boxes.
When asking students , the situation seems to be even worse, they are working the same hours as regular employees while not being paid a cent. Yet when asked from Foxconn they said all of the students are working voluntarily and aren’t being forced, they can leave this program whenever they want. On the other hand the Xi’an Institute refused to comment on whether they receive agent fees or providing what seems to be free labor to Foxconn, they just said that it’s all legal and it was “mainly about making students learn about society and experience life.”
It’s not the first time that the Xi’an Institute has been providing a compulsory internship to Foxconn. We may see reports from Sony about this matter soon enough as it does affect the upcoming consoles reputation. Who knows if your PS4 was packaged or assembled by a forced student over at Foxconn.
